With Version 5.1 of MDrill HDD drillings can have vertical as well as horizontal bends. With MDrill several drilling fluid pressures are calculated. First of all the minimum pressure needed for particle transportation out of the bore hole. Second the maximum pressure at which cracks around the bore hole are likely to occur. Finally the maximum pressure at which a blow out can be expected. MDrill will calculate these pressures for a phases during the HDD process. In the final phase (pull out) the program will also calculate the stresses in the pipe, taking into account the friction between the pipe and the soil, reduced bij the drilling fluid. The tremendous growth in China puts a high demand on engineering capacity, therefore easy to use design software for geo engineering is more than welcome. Besides this demand, new soil tests are being introduced, such as the CPT test. In the Netherlands we have long tradition with CPT tests and developed design codes based on this soil test.
